Welcome! I'm Lori Helfenbaum (she/her). I'm so glad you're here.
As a Registered Social Worker and the founder of Wide Lens Counselling, I've been working as a therapist for the last 12 years. My work is shaped by narrative and postmodern approaches, as well as feminist and anti-oppressive frameworks. I've had the privilege of working as a psychotherapist in a wide variety of settings, including not-for-profit, post-secondary, healthcare, and private practice.
I have also been on the client side of therapy, and I know what it is like to be misunderstood or reduced to a diagnosis. This informs how I work; I take people seriously within the larger context of their lives, and do not separate individual distress from the systems and relationships that shape it.
I provide counselling to individuals (18+), couples, families, and other therapists, and also offer professional supervision and consultation services. (If you are a new therapist who is interested in learning to practice through a postmodern lens and would like to join one of my bi-weekly supervision groups, please contact me at wide_lens@outlook.com.)
My approach is collaborative, warm, and thoughtful. I will ask questions to help you explore forces and patterns that you are already be aware of, but also those that might be hard to see from the inside. I stay attentive to power in the room - including my own. If this way of working resonates with you, I invite you to to reach out for a free 15-minute consultation.
Training
I obtained my Masters of Social Work in 2012. In addition to completing a year-long externship at the Calgary Family Therapy Centre, I have completed numerous intensive trainings through the Vancouver School of Narrative Therapy and Re-Authoring Teaching. I continue to take a wide variety of trainings to keep current and informed, on a yearly basis.
My work is grounded in feminist, Narrative, Solution-Focused, and Response-Based practice. I provide a space where you can speak openly, feel understood and explore what matters most to you. I work with adults of all identities and backgrounds, and am a member of the Trans Affirming Network. My practice is 2SLGBTQIA+ affirming.
When we work together, I make every effort to provide:
I believe therapy works best when you feel safe and respected. Every session is shaped around your needs and your goals.
I offer counselling across many areas of mental health and emotional wellbeing.
All sessions are confidential. You can speak openly without fear of judgment or professional scrutiny.
I hold a Master of Social Work and I am a Registered Social Worker in Alberta. I have many years of experience supporting individuals, couples, and families with concerns related to identity, relationships, stress, life transitions, and emotional wellbeing.
My ongoing training includes:
I continue to learn and grow as a therapist so that I can offer a practice that is both grounded and responsive.
If you feel we might be a good fit, I would be happy to talk with you. You are welcome to reach out with any questions or to book a first session.
