About Lori

Welcome! I'm Lori Helfenbaum (she/her). I'm so glad you're here.

I am a Registered Social Worker and the founder of Wide Lens Counselling, My work is shaped by a variety of approaches (narrative, response-based, solution-focused, and family systems therapies) and is grounded in feminist and anti-oppressive frameworks. For the last 12 years, I've had the privilege of working as a psychotherapist in a wide variety of settings, including not-for-profit, post-secondary, healthcare, and private practice.

I have also been on the client side of therapy, and I know what it is like to be misunderstood or reduced to a diagnosis or series of symptoms. This informs how I work; I take people seriously within the larger context of their lives, and do not separate individual distress or problems from the systems and relationships that shape them. And with this, comes the opportunity to revise our relationship with the problems that impact us most.

I work with individuals (18+), couples, and families, and specializing in offering therapy to other therapists.

I also run an open supervision/consultation group for new therapists in the field who are interested in learning to practice through a postmodern lens. If you would like to join one of my bi-weekly supervision groups, please contact me at wide_lens@outlook.com.

My approach is collaborative and curious, and I check in regularly with you to ensure we are meeting your counselling goals. I believe that thoughtful questions can help you explore hopes, experiences, and patterns that you are already aware of, but also those that might be harder to see. I pay very close attention to all stories of resilience, resistance to hardship, and times when people's values shine, even in the unlikeliest of times. If this way of working resonates with you, I invite  you to to reach out for a free 15-minute consultation.

Training

I obtained my Masters of Social Work in 2012. In addition to completing a year-long externship at the Calgary Family Therapy Centre, I have completed numerous intensive trainings through the Vancouver School of Narrative Therapy and Re-Authoring Teaching. I continue to take a wide variety of trainings to keep current and informed, on a yearly basis.

My work is grounded in feminist, Narrative, Solution-Focused, and Response-Based practice. I provide a space where you can speak openly, feel understood and explore what matters most to you. I work with adults of all identities and backgrounds. My practice is 2SLGBTQIA+ affirming and I am a member of the Trans Affirming Network.

What clients can expect

When we work together, I make every effort to provide:

  • A non judgmental space where you can talk freely
  • A pace that feels comfortable for you
  • A focus on your strengths, values, commitments, and choices
  • Conversations that explore both the present and the larger context around your life
  • Support that honors your dignity and the knowledge you already carry

I believe therapy works best when you feel safe and respected. Every session is shaped around your needs and your goals.

My therapy specializations

I offer counselling across many areas of mental health and emotional wellbeing.

All sessions are confidential. You can speak openly without fear of judgment or professional scrutiny.

Training & experience

I hold a Master of Social Work and I am a Registered Social Worker in Alberta. I have many years of experience supporting individuals, couples, and families with concerns related to identity, relationships, stress, life transitions, and emotional wellbeing.

My ongoing training includes:

  • Narrative therapy
  • Response-based, solution-focused practice
  • Feminist and postmodern therapeutic approaches
  • Work that centers people from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community

I continue to learn and grow as a therapist so that I can offer a practice that is both grounded and responsive.

“I realize that no two people are the same and therefore tailor my therapy to understand and meet the specific needs of my clients. Regardless of what you’re struggling with, I aim to help you connect to what you really want, explore what might be getting in the way, and make space for possibility and hope..”
Lori Helfenbaum (she/her), RSW, MSW.
